Aster Group is a successful group of businesses delivering a range of social housing and care services in southern and south west England. Aster had been working on continuous improvement for a number of years and was interested in applying Lean Thinking principles and tools more rigorously. Changing organisational culture is dependent on challenging the existing culture and implementing a fresh set of beliefs, values and purpose amongst employees. Transforming culture can be difficult, especially in organisations where culture is deeply embedded. Change is easier to implement and sustain if everyone is involved and that there is support for its renewed direction.
Simply offering a different vision and giving people some training cannot change culture. Cultures change by enabling people to do things differently – make processes simpler, measure sensibly, equip people to do their job and allow them to solve their own problems, and they will develop a different perspective. Ownership, engagement and commitment follow, and the culture starts to shift.
